Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaking. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. The website hosts videos which include commentary on the depictions of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. She is the creator and executive director of Feminist Frequency an educational, non-profit website which explores representations of women in popular media narratives. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular media. In addition, she works to raise the awareness of harassment on social media targeted towards women as well as marginalized groups of people. With a master's in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She has been interested in gender issues and feminism at a early age. In 2009, when she was continuing to study at the university level she launched the Feminist Frequency site. Someone who hoped to create a web series that examined the representation of gender in video games, she was targeted by an online campaign. The attack did have been a hindrance, rather it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic.
